8. Let there be light

Finn left his large family hoping to find peace and quiet in a bachelor pad on Ireland’s South Coast. But that wasn’t to be…

This happened last year and my encounter scared me so much that I legged it straight out of the place and haven’t been back since. I think you’ll understand why.

I’d just got my first job and was thrilled to leave my parents’ house and move into my own home. A couple of my new work colleagues asked if I wanted to share their flat but, having grown up with a house full of boisterous siblings getting on my nerves, I fancied having somewhere to myself, at least for a while. So when my cousin Seamus offered me the use of a tiny whitewashed bungalow in the next street from him, I jumped at the chance.

Sure, there was the odd bang from the ancient wardrobe in my room at night. And a couple of times while I was in bed, I’d hear creaking, as though someone were creeping across the room. But I was so pleased with myself, embarking on this new, adult life, that I chose to ignore the sounds.

A couple of months in, I was settling down in bed one night with a book when the bulb in my overhead light blew, leaving me in darkness. I didn’t have a lamp in there or anywhere else in the house, so rather than get up to read or go straight to sleep, I thought I’d change the bulb.

I found one in the kitchen and brought it through, along with a chair to stand on. The ceilings weren’t very high, so I knew I’d be able to reach easily enough.

I struggle to sleep anyway so had followed the advice of putting blackout curtains in the bedroom to keep out the light. And they did their job perfectly – but that was far from an advantage this particular night.

Ensuring the light switch was down, so I wouldn’t be blinded by the glare when I screwed the bulb in, I freed it from its packaging. Then I climbed onto the chair and grasped the light fitting. Suddenly, the bedroom door swung shut, cutting off the light from the hall. I couldn’t see a thing, apart from the area that was illuminated by the sliver of light coming from under the door.

‘Oh, these draughty old houses,’ I said to myself. I’m not afraid of the dark – or I never used to be – so I carried on with my task and raised the bulb over my head. Immediately I felt a poke in my ribs so sharp I dropped the bulb. It struck the wooden floor and I heard tinkling as the filaments inside broke. I gasped in shock. Both hands flew to where I’d been jabbed, then another blow came, this time to my middle back. Fear bubbled up inside me but, even in my terrified state, I knew I had to get down carefully to avoid stamping on the dropped bulb and possibly shredding my bare feet.
